1. All massage types are basically the same
Of course it is not true! There are many different massages and all of them have its own technique and role. Swedish massage focuses on stress relief and refreshing. Sport massages, like deep tissue focuses more on reducing muscle and joint pain. These masseurs use different type of techniques, some of them are more powerful than a regular massage. Thai massages gives you a special mind-body experience.
2. Massage only moves muscles around
Not true at all! Trained massage therapists can help alleviate swollen joints by gently moving stagnant synovial fluid. They can also stretch tightened areas of the fascia, the tissue that connects bones, joints and muscle.
3. If it doesn’t hurt, it isn’t effective
The goal of massage is to relax the muscles to allow proper tissue release and effective healing. If you find yourself holding your breathe, or tightening the muscle being worked because it’s painful, the pressure is too deep and the massage is counter-productive to its purpose. Always talk to your therapist during the session if you’re uncomfortable. Good massage therapists cause results, not pain.
4. Do not interrupt the therapist with questions or comments during a massage
You should always say what you need to your therapist to make sure you are comfortable during the massage. Please let us know if you need more or less pressure. Let us know if anything feels too uncomfortable for you. If you need to chat to feel more at ease that’s fine too. If you don’t want to look or speak to another person during your session, that’s fine too. The session is for your benefit and on your dime so make sure you are comfortable and have good communication with your therapist.
